  • In the restaurant industry this bowl is called a “monkey bowl”.
  • Clear glazed fruit bowls are known to exist. Instead of applying a color glaze, HLC will sometimes apply clear glaze to the bisque piece to obtain more of a natural/neutral look.
  • General retailers were notified by HLC, that the fruit bowl would be discontinued effective August 1, 2018. With further research, I was advised that, effective January 2019, fruit bowls would only be available through HLC’s retail stores and website. And only in the following colors of Cobalt Blue, Turquoise, Sunflower, Shamrock, Scarlet, and Lemongrass.
  • In February 2019, I was advised that the fruit bowls would be available to “small accounts and .coms”.
  • As of this update (5-2024) fruit bowls are available to all independent retailers and .coms.
  • With the introduction of Butterscotch in 2020 – FTC stopped producing these bowls in Shamrock, Ivory, and Slate.
  • With the introduction of Twilight in 2021 – FTC added Cobalt Blue to the out of production line up
  • Sapphire fruit bowls are known to exist. One sold at Strawser Auctions in June 2021 for $250.00 + buyers premium.  (Photo courtesy of Strawser Auctions)
  • There are known fruit bowls glazed in the Aqua glaze from FTC’s Terrace dinnerware line.
  • The illustration to the left shows the 4-pack set that Macy’s sold in the mixed colors of Peacock, Shamrock, Tangerine and Sunflower.

  • The illustration to the right shows how the two different sizes of Vintage fruit bowls (back left/right) are totally different in style than the Post 86 fruit bowl (center). The Vintage are straight sided where the Post 86 is slanted.

Vintage 4-3/4″ fruit bowl (right) – measures 4-13-16″ diameter x 1-9/16″ height
Vintage 5-1/2″ fruit bowl (left) – measures 5-9/16″ diameter x 1-11/16″ height

  • The illustration to the left, shows how most of the Vintage fruit bowls (bottom) have a wet foot (glazed) where Post 86 (top) has a dry foot (unglazed).
  • Beginning in the early 1950’s, HLC started wiping the glaze from the foot of various bowls. This was done for time/labor savings, having changed from placing the ware on sagger pins to shelves through the kiln. As a result, you will find some Vintage fruit bowls with a dry foot (unglazed – right) and some with a wet foot (glazed – left) as illustrated to the right.
  • However, you will only find sagger pin marks, which can be found around the underside of the bowls rim, on the wet foot bowls.
  • There is also an Amberstone/Casualstone/Fiesta® Ironstone bowl that looks like the Post 86 fruit bowl (left), however it is called a dessert bowl (right) and is a little bit larger as shown in the illustration to the left.
  • Like other Fiesta® Ironstone pieces, the dessert bowl (right) does not have a backstamp as shown in the illustration to the right. But does have a wet foot (glazed) like the Vintage pieces do.

Amberstone/Casualstone/Fiesta® Ironstone – measures 5-1/2” diameter x 1-1/2” height. (Amberstone not shown.)
