  • The extra-large base (left) is different in design from the smaller original version (right) as shown in the illustration to the left. 
  • The incised rings are very noticeable on the extra-large, where the small original version has none.
  • The finial on the lids helps distinguish between the two sizes. The extra-large (left) is just that extra-large, so there is no real mistaking which size you have.

  • Sapphire small covered butter dishes are known to exist. One sold at Strawser Auctions in March 2017 for $1000.00
  • Another sold in March 2022 for $850.00.

  • You will find on most of the small bases, an embossed molders mark (like the “JƎ”), as shown in the illustration to the right.
  • Some bases will be ink stamped, most will have incised stamps and others may not have a stamp at all. This does not change the value of the piece.

 

  • Early versions of the small butter base (right) are straighter than the later versions (left) (approx. 1993) as illustrated to the left

 

  • The illustration to the right is of an Amberstone covered butter dish. The Amberstone/Casualstone design has an underglaze decoration.
