  • The hostess bowl was exclusive to J. C. Penney’s until June 2009. It was then released to all general retailers.
  • This bowl, like the millennium candlesticks and presentation bowl, have the three embossed art deco styled pillars pointing downwards.
  • HLC took White and Plum hostess bowls out of the production line in December 2013.
  • Shamrock and Claret were added to the out of production list in April 2017 with Sage following in March 2018, then Ivory and Slate in March 2019.
  • The hostess bowl design came about by chance verses design. Large candles were very popular back in the late 1990’s, so JC Penney’s buyer, Richard Brinkman (who was HLC’s vice president of sales and marketing), asked HLC to design a large pedestal candle holder for JC Penney’s. From my research, it looks like there were possibly four different designs produced. Interesting though, only one design was presented to JC Penney’s which was close in design to the Periwinkle Blue version which is shown here. According to Mr. Brinkman, “the interior was not glazed”. Mr. Brinkman wasn’t happy with the sample, but when he turned the candle holder over, he liked it as a bowl, the hostess bowl was born.
  • Below are other versions of candle holder prototypes that I have come across. I am not sure in which order they were designed, but I thought you would enjoy seeing them.
  • The illustration to the left shows a White version which is like the Periwinkle Blue that is shown above without the Dancing Lady logo on the top.
  • This specific prototype sold at Strawser Auctions in November 2017 for $1,100.00. (Photos courtesy of Dana Heath-Thomas)
  • These two illustrations (either side) show a Chartreuse version, that sold at Strawser Auction in March 2018 for $750.00.
  • It is glazed on the underside with a dry foot on the base rim.
  • This measures about 6-1/2” diameter x 1-1/2” height.
  • The illustration to the right shows another Chartreuse style. It reminds me of a smaller version of an upside-down pasta bowl (12-1/2”). It has the indent in the center like the version above for the candle. It is glazed on the underside with a dry foot on the base rim.
  • This one measures about 8” diameter. (Photo courtesy of the family of Candy Fagerlin – The Little Round Table)
