Covered Casserole – 70 oz. – No longer in production

Produced in the following colors – White, Black, Rose, Apricot, Cobalt Blue, Yellow, Turquoise, Periwinkle Blue, Sea Mist Green, Lilac, Persimmon, Chartreuse, Pearl Gray, Juniper, Cinnabar, Sunflower, Plum, Shamrock, Tangerine, Scarlet, Peacock, Heather, Evergreen, Ivory, Chocolate, Lemongrass, Paprika, Marigold, Flamingo, Lapis, Poppy.

It was NOT produced in the following colors – Sapphire, Slate and all colors produced after Slate.

 

  • As shown in the illustration to the left, the original production number on the casserole base was 0724. It was later changed to 0482. And the original production number on the casserole lid was 0725 and was later changed to 0483.
  • The large mixing bowl, which was renamed a multi-purpose bowl in 2008 when the baking bowls were introduced, is used as the base to this set.
  • Juniper covered casseroles were sold exclusively through Dayton’s, Hudson’s and Marshall Field’s.
  • Raspberry are known to exist.
  • In my research, I noticed this casserole had at least 3 different backstamps. You can also find some of version three with an ink stamp as well (double stamped). See the below for illustrations.

  • When the Fiesta® casserole was in the planning stages, HLC originally designed it after the Amberstone/Casualstone/ Fiesta® Ironstone covered casserole. The illustration to the right shows one of these early versions glazed in Fiesta® Black. (Photo courtesy of Steve Beals.)
  • A casserole like the one shown to the right sold on eBay for $493.00 in March 2019.
  • Check out Laurel Hollow Park’s site for the 1986 Fiesta® brochure showing this piece. 

 

  • In the illustration to the left, you can see the difference between the original designed 70 oz. casserole beside the ’88 redesign.
  • Early versions (right) had a flat bottom, a lip/rim on the inside of the bowl and slightly smaller lid.

It was NOT produced in the following colors – Black, Rose, Apricot, Yellow, Periwinkle Blue, Sea Mist Green, Lilac, Persimmon, Sapphire, Chartreuse, Pearl Gray, Juniper, Cinnabar, Peacock, Heather, Evergreen, Chocolate, Marigold, Flamingo, Foundry, Peony and all colors produced after Peony.

  • These were produced at The Hall China Company, which The Homer Laughlin China Company bought in 2010.
  • Peacock bases were sold at the Columbus, Ohio tent sale in 2016.
  • Sage was taken out of production in March 2018, then Shamrock and Ivory were added in March 2019.

  • It was later changed to an unglazed base as shown in the illustration on the right.
  • The lid on the 90 oz. casserole is not the same lid used on the 70 oz. casserole. The 90 oz. lid has more of a rim around the edge (right) as shown in the illustration to the left.
  • The 90 oz casserole lid (left) also has multiple rings around the finial that the 70 oz. lid does not have as shown in the illustration to the right.
  • The 90 oz. lid also fits the beverage dispenser and tortilla warmer.

  •  In February 2022 FTC announced that the 90 oz. Large Covered Casserole (Item Number 1466) would be discontinued.  That it would be “reintroduced with a slight makeover.  It had a redesign to its base; a new foot was added”.   The below illustration shows the original base (left) along side the redesigned base with the prominent foot. (right).  
  • In the 8-8-2023 shape sheet FTC notes that this set would only be produced in the following colors – White, Turquoise, Scarlet, Lapis, Daffodil, Peony, and Jade.

  • Ivory are known to exist.  
  • August 2024 FTC stopped producing this set in Sunflower, Poppy, Meadow and Twilight.
  • In the illustration to the left is shown (L-R) Post 86 – 90 oz. covered casserole, Vintage onion soup and Vintage casserole.

Casualstone/Fiesta® Ironstone (not shown) was only produced in Antique Gold.

  • Another Vintage casserole was the promotional covered French casserole as illustrated to the left.

It measures 8-1/8” diameter (11-13/16” wide including handle) x 4-3/16” height including lid (2-1/4” height without lid).
