Smiley a.k.a. Happy Face – Bon-Ton

Pattern No. 8733

  • This pattern was introduced in 2003 on Sunflower Fiesta®.
  • It can be found on the following pieces: luncheon plate (0465)
  • It was an exclusive to the Saks Southern and Northern Store Groups (Proffitt’s, McRae’s,  Bergner’s  Boston Store, Carson Pirie Scott, Herberger’s and Younker’s).
  • In 2005 Bon-Ton acquired part of the Saks Northern Store Groups. (Herberger’s, Carson Pirie Scott, Bergner’s, Boston Store and Younkers)
  • This pattern then became an  exclusive to the Bon-Ton stores.
  • Bon-Ton sold this design under the name Smiley on their websites (as illustrated to the left), yet the sales sticker on the plate says Happy Face.
  • In 2016 you could find these plates on Amazon.  Did Amazon buy the overstock from Bon-Ton?

Pattern No. 8733

  • In 2019 Dillard’s started selling this design and it is currently still in production.  (10/2024)

Fun Fact –

  • There are two versions of Smiley mugs which were decorated outside of the factory.  One smile leans to the right and one smile leans to the left as shown in the illustration to the right.
  • Right leaning ring handle mugs were produced for Just Dishes Dinnerware and another eBay seller CTamms in a variety of colors.
  • Left leaning ring handle mugs were produced by Just Dishes Dinnerware only in the following colors –  White, Rose, Periwinkle, Lilac, Persimmon, Chartreuse, Pearl Gray, Sunflower, Shamrock, Tangerine, Scarlet and Peacock. 
  • Sea Mist Green and Peacock java mugs were made by Just Dishes Dinnerware.  
  • You will find a few large disc pitchers, jumbo mugs, gusto bowls, jumbo bowls, sauceboats and large teapots with the Smiley pattern as well done by Just Dishes Dinnerware.
  • Most of the pieces decorated by Just Dishes Dinnerware will have their backstamp on the base of the piece.
